MEXICO CITY, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tigres UANL manager Guido Pizarro said Monday the signing of Uruguayan striker Rodrigo Aguirre would bolster his team's attack in both the CONCACAF Champions Cup and Mexico's Liga MX.
Aguirre, 31, agreed to join the Monterrey-based club on a three-year deal last week after parting ways with Mexican rivals America.
"He is a very competitive player with a lot of commitment and great quality," Pizarro told reporters. "He is very hungry to do well. He will help us to have a strong campaign in the league and in the Champions Cup."
Aguirre made 58 appearances for America, scoring 16 goals, after joining the club from Monterrey in July 2024.
His career has also included spells at Udinese, Botafogo and Empoli, among other clubs. He has been capped nine times for Uruguay's national team and scored three goals.
Tigres, one of Mexico's most successful clubs, is currently second in the 18-team Liga MX standings with three wins from five games.
The club drew 0-0 with Canada's Forge FC in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions Cup first-round clash in Hamilton last week. The return fixture will be played at Tigres' Estadio Universitario on Tuesday.
"We are focused on qualifying. I trust the squad I have," Pizarro said. "We know how important this competition is for the fans and for the institution. Forge is a competitive team with a lot of intensity. They are a compact team that knows how to sit deep, but we must find a way to impose our style to get the win," he added. ■
