KABUL, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities have launched construction work on a large-scale infrastructure project aimed at expanding and rehabilitating a key roadway in Kandahar city, the capital of southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province, according to a statement from the provincial government office on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the project, with a total investment of 1.4 billion afghanis (over 21.5 million U.S. dollars), includes the widening and comprehensive reconstruction of the road, which is regarded as one of the most significant urban development initiatives in the city in recent years.

Under the plan, the road will be rebuilt in a modern and standard design, with a width of 60 meters and a length of 9.5 km. The construction work is expected to be completed within 18 months, in accordance with the approved schedule, the statement said.

Residents have welcomed the project, saying that the improved infrastructure will help ease traffic congestion, enhance transportation services, and contribute to economic growth in Kandahar.
