ISLAMABAD, Feb. 4 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan on Tuesday launched the Index of Transparency and Accountability in Pakistan (ITAP), the country's first homegrown survey measuring transparency and accountability, aimed at establishing a recurring national benchmark for governance reform.

The index was unveiled in the capital by the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) in collaboration with Ipsos.

Chairman of the FPCCI Policy Advisory Board Mian Zahid Hussain told the launching ceremony that the index would fill a long-standing gap by providing nationally representative evidence on citizens' interactions with public institutions, restoring trust and improving Pakistan's investment climate.

The ITAP had already conducted its first survey, which identified strengthening transparency, addressing public awareness gaps and improving communication about institutional reforms as key priorities for advancing governance, building trust and enhancing investor confidence, said the chairman.

On the occasion, Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal said that the initiative would bring transparency and accountability to the forefront of national discourse.

The minister highlighted a gap between public perceptions and lived experience, warning that unaddressed negative perceptions could undermine national progress and distort realities.
