COLOMBO, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka recorded nine cases of child marriage and 79 teenage pregnancies in 2025, the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) said on Thursday.
The NCPA said a total of 10,455 complaints related to children were lodged during 2025. Out of these, 545 involved sexual harassment and 231 involved grave sexual abuse.
The NCPA also received information on 38 cases of rape, 150 cases of cyber abuse targeting children and 20 attempted child suicides. Three abortions involving teenagers were also recorded.
In addition, the agency received 42 complaints concerning children without birth certificates and nine cases of children under the age of five being left behind when their parents migrated overseas.
The NCPA said the figures highlight continuing vulnerabilities faced by children and stressed the need for stronger preventive measures, public awareness and coordinated intervention to ensure child protection nationwide. ■
