KABUL, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- A total of 255 Afghan prisoners have been released from Pakistani jails and safely returned to Afghanistan over the past week, the Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation announced on Thursday.

According to the ministry's news release, the detainees had been imprisoned in various facilities across Pakistan for periods ranging from one day to two months. Following their release, they crossed back into Afghanistan via the Spin Boldak border in southern Kandahar province.

The returnees received assistance at the border before being transported to their home provinces, the statement added.

More than 10,000 Afghan citizens remain incarcerated abroad, primarily in Iran and Pakistan, as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs a couple of months ago.
