JAKARTA, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Indonesian authorities have stepped up passenger screening at Bali's I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport to prevent the possible entry of the Nipah virus, an airport official said on Thursday.
Gede Eka Sandi Asmadi, head of the Communication and Legal Division of PT Angkasa Pura Indonesia at the airport, said stricter monitoring has been implemented for passengers arriving from overseas amid a rise in Nipah virus cases abroad.
He said the airport is closely coordinating with the Class I Denpasar Center for Health Quarantine to conduct comprehensive supervision in arrival areas, including body temperature checks using thermal scanners at international and domestic terminals.
Passengers showing symptoms will be referred by health quarantine officers to a designated hospital in Denpasar for further examination, Gede said, urging travelers to maintain their health and stay informed about the latest developments related to the virus.
I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport is one of Indonesia's busiest international gateways, handling more than 24 million passengers in 2025, the majority of whom were international travelers. ■
