LOS ANGELES, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- A total of 789 measles cases have been reported in the U.S. state of South Carolina since October amid the ongoing outbreak, the state's Department of Public Health said Tuesday.

At least 89 new measles cases have been confirmed in the state over the past five days. There are currently 557 people in quarantine and 20 in isolation, according to the department.

Many elementary, middle and high schools have students in quarantine, the department said.

Nationwide, 416 confirmed measles cases have been reported in 2026 as of Jan. 22, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The United States reported 2,255 confirmed measles cases in 2025, the highest annual total since 1992.

Health authorities said vaccination remains the best way to prevent measles and stop this outbreak.
