ANKARA, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to reaching a 5-billion-U.S. dollar bilateral trade volume and agreed to deepen cooperation on security, energy and development, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said here Tuesday.

The announcement came after a meeting between Erdogan and visiting Nigerian President Bola Tinubu.

"During our meeting, we reaffirmed our commitment to the 5-billion-dollar trade volume target and discussed the steps to be taken," Erdogan said at a joint press conference.

Erdogan said Türkiye stands with Nigeria in its fight against terrorism, with both sides evaluating closer cooperation on military training and intelligence sharing. He also welcomed energy cooperation between Turkish and Nigerian firms.

Tinubu, who is on a three-day official visit to Türkiye starting from Monday, said at the joint press conference that the meeting addressed trade, the prevention of double taxation, and the removal of barriers to economic cooperation.

"We showed that we can work together to overcome these challenges," he said, referring to regional security issues.

Prior to the press conference, the two leaders witnessed the signing of nine agreements covering areas including diplomacy, education, media, and military collaboration, among others.
