MOSCOW, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Unified Energy System has registered a historic high in electricity consumption, the system operator was quoted by TASS as saying on Thursday.

During the morning peak load on Thursday, electricity consumption in Russia's unified energy system reached an all-time high of 171,943 megawatts (MW), surpassing the earlier record of Dec. 11, 2023, by 554 MW, the operator said.

The system operator attributed the surge in power demand primarily to persistent severe cold that has covered large parts of Russia, leading to increased heating needs and higher overall electricity consumption.

The Unified Energy System of Russia, a holding company founded in 1992, controls about 70 percent of Russia's installed electric capacity, 96 percent of its high-voltage grid and over 70 percent of its transmission lines.
