MADRID, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Spanish football has been affected by a high-speed train crash in the south of Spain on Sunday which has so-far claimed 42 lives, with the news that the father of Getafe defender David Cordon Manche 'Davinchi' was one of the victims.
David Cordon Sr was travelling back from Madrid to his home town of Huelva on one of the two trains involved in the collision outside of the small town of Adamuz, close to the city of Cordoba.
He had spent the weekend with his 18-year-old son (who is currently injured) and watched Getafe's 1-0 defeat at home to Valencia on Sunday before catching the train from Madrid's Puerta de Atocha railway station.
The Spanish media reported 50-year-old David, who had represented Spain at Futsal, winning two European Championships medals in 2001 and 2004 and runner-up in the 2003 and 2004 World Championships, was sitting in the second wagon of the train when it collided with a train heading from Malaga to Madrid which had come off the tracks.
He had been working as a nurse in a hospital in Huelva.
"The Club extends its deepest condolences to David, as well as to his entire family and loved ones, and shares in their grief during this difficult time.
"The entire Getafe family joins in mourning and offers their heartfelt support during this challenging time, sending them strength, encouragement, and a warm embrace.
"We met you in June 2025. You were with us for a short time, but it was enough to win the hearts of everyone who knew you, thanks to your kindness, friendliness, and generosity. We will miss you dearly!" posted Getafe on its official website. ■
