KUALA LUMPUR, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia unveiled its National Defense Industry Policy (NDIP) on Wednesday to strengthen its defense sector and to build a credible local industrial capability.
This comes as Malaysia seeks to respond to current defense demands of the Malaysian Armed Forces, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said in his speech at the policy's launch.
"Malaysia must build a resilient local defense supply chain. Local vendors will be assisted through fiscal incentives, as well as industry mentoring programs," he said, noting that local talent will be developed through defense TVET (technical and vocational education and training), veteran retraining and youth development.
Anwar added that the NDIP also set a target for Malaysia to emerge as a regional defense hub by formulating a defense export strategy to expand international markets, while strengthening cooperation with key partners. ■
