COLOMBO, Jan. 20 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's labor department has announced an increase in the national minimum monthly wage in the private sector from 27,000 rupees to 30,000 rupees (about 96.92 U.S. dollars), effective Jan. 1, 2026.

Nadeeka Wataliyadda, commissioner general of labor, said the minimum daily wage will also increase from 1,080 rupees to 1,200 rupees from the same date, and that employers are required to make payments in line with the revised rates.

Under related legislation, responsibility for compliance with the statutory minimum wage applies to all employers, including both direct and principal employers where workers are engaged through contractors or intermediaries.

Employees who believe their employers are not complying with the revised wage or statutory payment requirements may file complaints through the labor department's complaints management system or submit written complaints to the nearest labor office.
