BAGHDAD, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Iraq's Counter-Terrorism Service (CTS) said Sunday that its forces arrested three Islamic State militants in intelligence-based operations in Anbar and Sulaymaniyah provinces.
In a statement, the CTS said two of the suspects were detained in Anbar, a western province that was once a stronghold of the extremist group. One of them had worked as a security operative for Islamic State and was involved in bomb-making workshops, the statement said.
The third suspect was arrested in coordination with Kurdish security forces in Sulaymaniyah, in Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdish region.
Iraq declared victory over Islamic State in 2017, but remnants of the group continue to carry out attacks on security forces and civilians, particularly in cities, desert areas and remote regions. Authorities have since announced the ongoing arrest of suspected militants. ■
