MADRID, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Girona moved to strengthen its squad in the winter transfer window, announcing Sunday the arrival of Argentine attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri on loan from Manchester City until the end of the season.
The deal was confirmed after midfielder Jhon Solis completed a move to English Championship side Birmingham City, allowing Girona to comply with financial fair play rules and register Echeverri.
Echeverri joined Manchester City in January 2025 but spent the first half of the season on loan at Bayer Leverkusen. He was recalled at the end of December after struggling for playing time with the German club.
The 19-year-old has been training with Girona for around two weeks while awaiting final clearance, and coach Michel Sanchez said he has been impressed by the Argentina U23 international.
"He makes a difference in the final third and has special energy in front of goal," Sanchez said. "He can help us resolve situations there, whether with assists, goals or his mentality."
Girona is also expected to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen on loan in the coming days, although further departures would be required to complete the move. ■
