UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations and its aid partners in Gaza called for the lifting of restrictions on school supplies so that more children can receive education, UN humanitarians said Friday.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said it is working with partners in trying to get more children back to school and help people suffering from the effects of severe winter weather.

OCHA said more than 440 learning spaces are operational, serving about 270,000 students with the help of more than 6,300 teachers. So far in January, 10 additional temporary learning sites in the Gaza governorate were renovated.

As for helping weather victims who lost their shelters in the winter storms, the office said more than 200 tents were distributed to families, along with thousands of tarpaulins, blankets, warm clothes, cooking and serving utensils, and solar-powered lights.

However, OCHA said that over 1 million people across the Gaza Strip still urgently need shelter assistance and durable solutions, including repairs to damaged homes and emergency shelter kits.
