KABUL, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has announced that 90 percent of the country's SIM cards are now legally registered, a local media outlet reported on Friday.
"We have 26 million active SIM cards across Afghanistan, of which about 24 million have been officially registered by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology. It can be said that 90 percent of SIM cards are now registered," the private media outlet TOLOnews quoted Enayatullah Alokozi, spokesperson for the ministry, as saying.
Alokozi further highlighted the government's progress, noting that four million new SIM cards have been added to the network since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021.
Official ministry statistics reveal that more than 8,810 telecommunications towers are currently operational throughout the country, supporting connectivity for millions. Additionally, around 7 million Afghans are now utilizing 4G services, reflecting enhanced infrastructure development.
This milestone represents a concerted effort to formalize mobile telecommunications, which have experienced substantial expansion under the current administration, contributing to broader digital accessibility and regulatory compliance in the sector. ■
