BAGHDAD, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Iraq on Thursday reaffirmed its "firm and principled" position against allowing its land, airspace or territorial waters to be used as a platform for military operations against any state, amid escalating regional tensions.

In a statement, Sabah al-Numan, spokesperson for the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi armed forces, said the stance was rooted in respect for state sovereignty and the principle of non-interference in internal affairs.

"Iraq is fully committed to preventing its territory from being used in ways that threaten the security and stability of neighboring countries or draw the country into conflicts," al-Numan said.

He urged all parties to exercise restraint, prioritize dialogue, and work seriously toward resolving disputes through peaceful and diplomatic means.

The statement comes as regional tensions have risen, with the United States repeatedly threatening military action against Iran. In June 2025, after Israel carried out what it described as a "pre-emptive strike" on Iran, Iraq filed a formal complaint with the UN Security Council, accusing Israel of violating Iraqi airspace to conduct military operations in the region.
