HONG KONG, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- The World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) UP! Global Summit kicked off on Friday in the event's debut in Hong Kong, convening top scientists, industry leaders, entrepreneurs and policymakers for insightful discussions on AI development and governance.
John Lee, chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), said via video link that Hong Kong's commitment to advancing the development of AI is central to its vision of becoming an innovation and technology center.
"Our approach is multifaceted, built upon the solid pillars of government investment, world-class research, strategic infrastructure, and a dynamic, open market," said Lee.
With the robust rule of law, a welcoming business environment, and a vibrant multicultural setting, Hong Kong is the perfect incubator for scientific exploration and technological breakthroughs, said Lee.
Noting that AI has become a core engine driving global technological and economic progress, Sun Dong, secretary for innovation, technology and industry of the HKSAR government, said that Hong Kong is steadily advancing a series of AI initiatives with a focus on "strengthening infrastructure and promoting the application-oriented approach."
The HKSAR government is working to establish the Hong Kong AI Research and Development Institute within this year as a new engine for discovery, translation, and real-world impact, Sun noted. ■
