UNITED NATIONS, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- The UN General Assembly (UNGA) will convene webcast interactive dialogues with candidates for the position of UN secretary-general in the week of April 20, UNGA President Annalena Baerbock announced Wednesday.

In a letter to all UN member states, Baerbock said that during the dialogues, each candidate will be given the opportunity to present her or his vision statement and member states will be able to ask questions and interact with the candidates.

She asked member states to submit nominations of candidates in advance of the interactive dialogues and no later than April 1. So far, only one nomination has been submitted.

Rafael Grossi, an Argentine national and director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, was officially nominated by Argentina in late November last year for the position.

On Nov. 25, Baerbock signed a joint letter with the President of the UN Security Council for the month of November, Michael Imran Kanu, permanent representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, formally initiating the selection and appointment process for the next UN secretary-general.

Antonio Guterres, the current and ninth secretary-general of the United Nations, took office in January 2017, and the next UN secretary-general will take over the role from Jan. 1, 2027.
