CARACAS, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Venezuelan workers marched on Wednesday through the streets of Caracas to demand the release of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, who were detained by U.S. military forces on Jan. 3.

Speaking by telephone during the rally, Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodriguez called on supporters to remain united in what she described as a struggle to secure the couple's return.

"We must stay mobilized to bring back the president and the first lady," Rodriguez said, urging national unity and continued efforts toward economic growth and social development.

The demonstration gathered at O'Leary Square in downtown Caracas, where Rodriguez also called for solidarity among workers and expressed confidence in the recently held National Constituent Congress of the Working Class, saying that she hoped it would lead to legislation promoting justice, inclusion and social equity.

Wills Rangel, head of the Bolivarian Socialist Workers' Central, called on the United States to return Maduro and Flores, vowing that supporters would continue to mobilize both in the streets and in workplaces.

Other speakers at the rally emphasized unity and described Maduro as a leader committed to dialogue, adding that they welcome government efforts to open diplomatic talks with countries that have imposed sanctions on Venezuela.
