ISLAMABAD, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Two terrorists were killed as a group of militants opened fire on a police check post in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, police sources said on Thursday.
The incident happened at about 10:40 p.m. local time (1740 GMT) on Wednesday in Dera Ismail Khan district where the attackers used small and heavy weapons to target the check post, the sources told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.
Police personnel at the post returned fire, killing the two militants and forcing the others to flee the scene, the sources added.
One police official sustained injuries in the exchange of fire and was shifted to a local district headquarters hospital for medical treatment, the sources said.
Security forces have cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the attackers, as militant activity has been reported in parts of the district in recent months. ■
