VIENTIANE, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Laos plans to prioritize cultural economic development over the next five years, using its rich cultural heritage as a driver of sustainable economic and social growth.

Speaking at a Lao government meeting, held in the Lao capital Vientiane from Monday to Tuesday, Lao Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism Suansavanh Viyaket outlined key strategic priorities aligned with the 12th National Congress of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP) and the 10th national socio-economic development plan.

The strategy aims to transform cultural assets into economic value while ensuring their strict protection and preservation. Key measures include strengthening the management of UNESCO World Heritage sites and national heritage areas, while promoting their responsible economic use to benefit society and local communities, according to Lao News Agency on Wednesday.

The ministry will also work to strengthen national identity by standardizing the Lao language and revitalizing traditional arts, literature and cultural values of all ethnic groups.

In tourism, Laos will promote sustainable development under the "Green Industry" framework by developing tourism products that combine natural attractions, historical sites and ethnic traditions. The plan also aims to improve coordination between government management and market needs and strengthen regional tourism links to attract more international visitors.

Suansavanh emphasized that economic progress must go hand in hand with cultural and spiritual values to ensure long-term national stability and sustainability.
