BEIRUT, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A Lebanese government employee was killed Sunday night in an Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.

The strike, carried out by an Israeli drone using a guided missile, targeted a car in southern Lebanon's Bint Jbeil city, according to the report.

A local newspaper identified the victim as Mohammad Adel al Saghir, a resident of Bint Jbeil.

Earlier in the day, Israeli warplanes launched intensive raids north of the Litani River, according to Lebanese sources.

A Lebanese security source told Xinhua that Israeli warplanes carried out more than 35 airstrikes in three waves, firing around 70 missiles at Hezbollah positions and residential buildings in the village of Kfar Hatta. The strikes caused extensive destruction, damaging dozens of homes.

These airstrikes come as Israel continues its attacks on Lebanon despite a U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel that took effect on Nov. 27, 2024. Israel claims its attacks are aimed at removing Hezbollah "threats," and maintains the presence of its forces at five main points in the Lebanese border area.
