WARSAW, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Former Polish Justice Minister and ex-Prosecutor General Zbigniew Ziobro has been granted political asylum by Hungary, his lawyer Bartosz Lewandowski said on social media platform X on Monday.

Ziobro is accused of committing a total of 26 criminal offenses in a Polish prosecution-led investigation into the Justice Fund. On Nov. 7 last year, the Polish parliament lifted Ziobro's parliamentary immunity in relation to all charges and approved his detention and arrest, according to the Polish Press Agency.

Ziobro later posted on X that he was targeted by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his associates for initiating numerous investigations into their alleged corruption and theft during his tenure as prosecutor general. He added that he had decided to remain abroad until "genuine guarantees of the rule of law are restored in Poland."

A senior figure in the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, Ziobro served as justice minister from 2005 to 2007 and again from 2015 to 2023.
