BAGHDAD, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani discussed regional security and the recent escalation in Syria's Aleppo during a phone call on Sunday, calling for de-escalation amid a volatile regional situation.
They emphasized the need for restraint and an immediate end to violence, citing "serious repercussions for the security and stability of the region," the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
They noted that de-escalation must be pursued through dialogue and peaceful means.
Aleppo has experienced days of intense clashes and reciprocal shelling between government forces and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, causing large-scale civilian displacement from affected neighborhoods.
The discussion also covered recent developments in Iran and Yemen, with both officials highlighting the direct influence of these issues on broader regional security.
The two sides agreed to intensify joint coordination, monitor security developments, work to limit the scope of violence, and bolster regional stability. ■
