BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Britain's Nick Montgomery has been appointed as head coach of Beijing Guoan, the Chinese Super League (CSL) club announced on Thursday.

Montgomery, 44, spent most of his playing career at Sheffield United before joining Australia's Central Coast Mariners in 2012.

After retiring in 2017, Montgomery became youth team coach and then head coach of Central Coast Mariners. More recently, he served as assistant coach at Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.

A Guoan statement expressed hopes that the team would show strength and vitality under Montgomery and his coaching team in the upcoming CSL season.

Spain's Quique Setien resigned as Guoan head coach last October, with acting head coach Ramiro Amarelle leading the team to finish fourth in the last season's CSL standings. In December, Guoan claimed its fifth CFA Cup title with a 3-0 victory over Henan FC.
