WELLINGTON, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's Wang Xinyu defeated Mexico's Renata Zarazua 7-5, 6-4 in the women's singles second round at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand, on Wednesday, advancing to the quarterfinals.

Wang won the tight first set 7-5, then broke serve to claim the second set in a one hour and 52 minutes straight-sets match.

World No. 57 Wang said post-match that despite "pretty windy" conditions, she adapted well by staying aggressive and adding "a few more extra shots" to dictate play.

"She is really a fighter. I've enjoyed the match," Wang added of her No. 77-ranked opponent Zarazua.

The 24-year-old overcame an early test with her first-round victory over American Caty McNally, defeating her 2-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a two hours and 10 minutes battle on Monday at the Women's Tennis Association 250 event.

Wang faces Britain's Francesca Jones in Friday's quarterfinals.
