BEIRUT, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Two members of Lebanon's Hezbollah were killed Tuesday afternoon in an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon, according to Lebanese health authorities and security sources.

The Public Health Emergency Operations Center at the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health said in a statement that an Israeli airstrike hit the village of Khirbet Selm in the Bint Jbeil district, killing two people. A Lebanese security source confirmed to Xinhua that the victims were Hezbollah members.

The Israeli military said in a statement that the operation was targeting "Hezbollah terrorists," in response to what it described as the group's attempts to rebuild its military capabilities. The statement did not specify casualties.

The strike came despite a U.S.- and French-brokered ceasefire between Hezbollah and Israel that took effect on Nov. 27, 2024, with Israel saying its continued attacks in southern Lebanon are intended to counter Hezbollah threats.
