LISBON, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- A nine-year-old boy was shot dead on Wednesday afternoon in Setubal, southern Lisbon metropolitan area, while a 14-year-old boy was seriously injured, local media reported on Thursday.
The circumstances remain unclear, but initial indications suggest the incident may be linked to New Year's Eve celebrations, with the firearm possibly handled by the two boys themselves, local media reported.
Police were alerted around 5 p.m. local time, according to the Public Security Police (PSP). The two boys were found by bystanders in an open area near a container zone.
Both were taken to a hospital, where the nine-year-old died from his injuries. The teenager was later transferred to another hospital in Lisbon and underwent surgery. ■
