BEIRUT, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji said Tuesday in a written message to his Iranian counterpart Abbas Araghchi that Lebanon seeks to build balanced relations with Iran based on respect for Lebanese sovereignty and independence.
In his response to a congratulatory message from Araghchi marking the beginning of the year 2026, Rajji called for the opening of a "new page" in bilateral relations, saying that peace and prosperity are urgently needed by Lebanon, Iran, and the wider region.
Rajji reiterated Lebanon's desire to establish an honest and transparent dialogue with Iran that would help rebuild mutual trust, emphasizing that the bilateral relationship must be grounded in a constructive approach and mutual respect.
He also emphasized that bilateral cooperation should be conducted exclusively through the two governments and their legitimate institutions in a manner that safeguards the sovereignty and independence of both countries.
The Lebanese government has repeatedly signaled that improving relations with Iran requires clear respect for state authority and non-interference, particularly regarding armed non-state actors in Lebanon. Earlier remarks by Iranian officials backing Hezbollah had sparked anger in Beirut. ■
