ULAN BATOR, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Mongolian government on Wednesday has decided to extend visa exemption entry for citizens of South Korea on short-term visits to Mongolia until the end of 2026.
The decision is part of the government's efforts to promote the development of four-season tourism in the country within the framework of the "Years to Visit Mongolia" tourism program and revitalize its tourism sector by attracting more foreign tourists, the government's press office said in a statement.
At present, Mongolia's economy depends heavily on the mining sector and on the export of mineral resources. Therefore, sustainable tourism development is considered one of the priorities for diversifying the country's economy and increasing the competitiveness of its tourism in the context of global competition.
According to the Mongolian Tourism Organization, Mongolia welcomed a total of 846,103 foreign tourists in 2025, up 5 percent year-on-year.
By 2028, Mongolia plans to receive a total of 2 million foreign tourists as part of its policy to support the tourism sector under the official motto "Go Mongolia." ■
