SYDNEY, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- A 24-year-old man has been charged over an alleged plot to carry out a public shooting in Sydney's southwest suburbs, police said on Tuesday.

The police force in the state of New South Wales (NSW) said in a statement that the man was arrested on Monday by detectives investigating an alleged plot to commit a public place shooting in Sydney's southwest.

Following inquiries, officers executed a search warrant at a property in Fairfield West, 26 km west of central Sydney, late on Sunday night.

During the search, officers allegedly located and seized prohibited drugs and a mobile phone. A second phone was seized during a search of a second property in the nearby suburb of Greenacre on Monday, and the 24-year-old was arrested at the Fairfield West house on Monday night.

He was taken to a police station and charged with offenses including two counts of possessing an unauthorized pistol, discharging a firearm with an intent to cause grievous bodily harm, directing activities of a criminal group and recruiting others to assist in carrying out criminal activity.
