TEHRAN, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday designated the Royal Canadian Navy a "terrorist organization" in response to Canada's move to label Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a "terrorist entity."

The ministry said in a statement that Ottawa's "illegal" decision in June 2024 of blacklisting the IRGC, which it deemed as "one of the pillars of Iran's official armed forces," was in "contradiction with the fundamental international law principles."

Based on the principle of reciprocity and pursuant to a 2019 law, Iran "identifies and announces the Royal Canadian Navy as a terrorist organization," the statement said.

On June 19, 2024, Canada listed the IRGC as a "terrorist entity" under the Criminal Code in what it claimed a "response to the IRGC's terrorist acts on its own and in knowing association with listed terrorist entities, such as Hezbollah and Hamas."
