BEIJING, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese government spokesperson on Monday said the military drills conducted by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) are specifically targeted at "Taiwan independence" separatist activities and external interference.

Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, said the drills aim to curb collusion between "Taiwan independence" forces and external elements that endangers peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and fundamentally safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Chen made the remarks in response to a media inquiry regarding drills code-named "Justice Mission 2025" around Taiwan Island, which started Monday and have been conducted by multiple forces of the PLA Eastern Theater Command.

Chen emphasized that the mission is intended to defend the fundamental interests of the Chinese nation and the immediate interests of Taiwan compatriots.

He said that the mission serves as a stern warning to "Taiwan independence" separatist forces and external interference. Any separatist attempt for "Taiwan independence" will be met with a heavy blow, he said.

The historical trend of national reunification is unstoppable, Chen said, adding that no one should underestimate Chinese people's strong resolve, firm will and great capabilities to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
