BERLIN, Dec. 22 (Xinhua) -- Nearly half of Germans believe the governing coalition will not survive until the next scheduled federal election, according to a poll published on Monday.

A survey conducted by YouGov for the German news agency dpa found that 49 percent of respondents do not expect the so-called "black-red" coalition between the Christian Democratic Union (CDU)/Christian Social Union (CSU) and the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to last until the regular election date in 2029.

Of those surveyed, 17 percent anticipate a coalition breakdown as early as next year, while a further 32 percent believe the alliance may endure through 2026 but collapse before completing the full legislative term.

Only 34 percent of respondents said they expect the coalition to remain intact until the next election.

The coalition ended up with a narrow 12-seat majority in the lower house of parliament, the Bundestag, following the election on Feb. 23. Since then, however, both governing partners have seen their public support decline. Recent polls put the conservatives at between 24 percent and 27 percent, and the SPD at 13 percent to 14 percent.

With five state elections looming in 2026, only 9 percent of respondents believe the coalition will see fewer conflicts next year, while most expect tensions to remain the same or worsen.

The YouGov survey was conducted between Dec. 12 and Dec. 15, with a nationwide sample of 2,116 respondents.
