MADRID, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Central defender Andreas Christensen may have played his last game for FC Barcelona, after the club confirmed on Sunday that he has suffered a serious knee injury.

"Andreas Christensen has a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee as the result of an unfortunate twist of the knee in Saturday's training session," read a club statement. Barcelona added that the Denmark international will not undergo surgery and will instead follow a conservative treatment plan.

The club did not provide a recovery timetable, but injuries of this nature can require up to five months of rehabilitation, putting his participation this season in doubt. With the 29-year-old out of contract at the end of June, there is a real possibility he has played his final match for the club.

The setback comes shortly after Christensen delivered a standout performance in Barcelona's 2-0 Copa del Rey win in Guadalajara, where he helped the club avoid extra time by scoring the opener late in the second half.

Christensen joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Chelsea in 2022. His four seasons in Spain have been interrupted by recurring injuries that have limited him to 70 La Liga appearances and 97 in all competitions.
