NAIROBI, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese tech giant Huawei, in partnership with Kenya's mobile service provider Safaricom, on Friday launched a program to provide low-cost internet service for residents of Kenya's Affordable Housing Program.

Feng Shen, key account director at Huawei, said the initiative leverages Huawei's digital quick optical distribution network to make the internet as affordable as possible.

"Our mission at Huawei is to bring digital solutions to every person, home and organization for a fully-connected and intelligent world," Feng said, adding that the network is cheaper and quicker to install and easier to maintain as compared to other solutions, making it possible to offer low prices for consumers.

Martin Chere, acting chief channels officer at Safaricom, said that with as little as 800 Kenyan shillings (about 6.2 U.S. dollars) per month, residents will be able to participate in the digital economy.

Chere noted that the initiative will empower residents by enabling them to engage in online learning, access government services and connect with family and friends.
