DAR ES SALAAM, Dec. 19 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian Prime Minister Mwigulu Nchemba has called on citizens to remain alert and reject attempts by individuals seeking to incite violence and destabilize the country's long-standing peace.
Addressing a public rally on Thursday in Kiwira, in the Mbeya region, Nchemba emphasized that recent unrest was aimed at undermining national stability and disrupting economic and social activities.
Nchemba was in Mbeya for an official tour to inspect public infrastructure and private property damaged during the Oct. 29 disturbances, when violent protests erupted in parts of Tanzania following disputed presidential elections.
He warned that groups attempting to provoke chaos were driven by interest in Tanzania's natural resources, noting that the country's strategic wealth makes it a target for external manipulation.
Stressing that peace remains the foundation of all development, Nchemba called on citizens, particularly young people, not to be swayed or used by individuals with harmful intentions.
"Where there is no peace, no development activity can take place," he said, underscoring the need for national unity and cooperation in safeguarding stability.
He also directed public servants to strengthen service delivery by engaging directly with communities, particularly in remote areas, to better understand their needs and work with them to resolve challenges.
Responsive governance, he added, is essential to maintaining public trust and social cohesion. ■
