KABUL, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- Afghanistan's Ministry of Finance has inaugurated four newly constructed cargo hangars at the Islam Qala border crossing in western Herat province, the ministry said in a statement.

Built at a cost of 78.7 million afghanis (about 1.18 million U.S. dollars), the hangars have been constructed to standard specifications and are now fully operational.

Each hangar has the capacity to accommodate around 8,000 metric tons of goods at a time, significantly enhancing storage facilities at the busy border crossing, the statement said.

The project is aimed at improving customs services, easing congestion, and facilitating smoother trade flows at Islam Qala, one of Afghanistan's most important commercial gateways linking the country with Iran, the statement added.

The completion of the new infrastructure is expected to strengthen border management and support the growing volume of imports and exports passing through the crossing.
