ISLAMABAD, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) -- A policeman and a passerby were killed in firing by unknown gunmen in Pakistan's northwest Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province, police officials said.
The attack happened in Bajaur district of the province after unidentified assailants attacked a polio team, killing a police officer on the spot, while another civilian was gunned down by the armed men when he tried to pursue the attackers, said local police officials on Tuesday.
The attackers fled the scene after carrying out the attack, said the police, adding that a search operation is underway to arrest the culprits.
The attack came a day after the government kicked off the final polio drive of 2025, which is set to run until Dec. 21.
Condemning the attack, KP Chief Minister Sohail Afridi termed the incident an assault on humanity and national responsibility, saying the campaign will not be allowed to be impacted in any way.
"Polio workers and the security personnel assigned to protect them are performing their national responsibility ... the perpetrators will be brought to justice," he added. ■
