LJUBLJANA, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia has called on the European Union (EU) to take an active role in sustaining the ceasefire in Gaza and advancing the peace process, the Slovenian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.
According to the statement, Slovenia urged the EU to help ensure the implementation of further steps outlined in the Gaza peace plan. Together with Ireland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal and Spain, it also called on the EU to take urgent action in response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon was quoted in the statement as saying that Israel must allow humanitarian access to Gaza and respect the role of United Nations agencies.
Slovenia, which is currently holding the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council, officially recognized the State of Palestine in June 2024. ■
