RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese manager Abel Ferreira has agreed to a two-year contract extension with Palmeiras, the Brazilian Serie A club said on Wednesday.
The 46-year-old's contract, which had been due to expire this month, will now run until December 2027 with no release clause.
"Over these five years I've identified with the club's values. Palmeiras is a way of life for me," he said, adding that the backing he received after this year's Copa do Brasil round-of-16 defeat to Corinthians was decisive. "I gave my word we would stay together."
Ferreira has guided Palmeiras to 10 trophies since taking charge of the Sao Paulo side in October 2020, including two Copa Libertadores triumphs and two Brazilian Serie A titles.
The former Sporting Lisbon defender is the most successful foreign coach in the history of Brazilian football and the only Palmeiras manager to win at least one trophy in five consecutive seasons.
"Abel is not only our most decorated coach but a competent and dedicated professional in whom I have full confidence," Palmeiras president Leila Pereira said. ■
