CAPE TOWN, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- A protest took place on Thursday near the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa's legislative capital, to request the release of Palestinian health workers alleged to have been illegally detained and tortured by Israel.

In a statement, the Healthcare Workers 4 Palestine-South Africa (HCW4P-SA) said that in Gaza, more than 1,700 healthcare workers have been killed by the Israeli military in the past two years, many through targeted attacks on hospitals, ambulances, and other medical facilities.

HCW4P-SA called for the immediate release of Palestinian medical staff held by Israel. The organization further demanded that restrictions on the delivery of aid into Gaza be immediately lifted.

"We here to highlight the ongoing genocide. Even though a ceasefire has been called, the atrocities are ongoing. This is a flagrant violation of international regulations and Israel should be held accountable, like any other sovereign nation would be," said Gadija Jaffer, a HCW4P-SA member.
