MEXICO CITY, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday highlighted the importance of the North American trade agreement, ahead of her meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the 2026 World Cup draw in Washington on Friday.

Speaking at a press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum said that the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on free trade "is very important for the three countries."

"It guarantees this region's competitiveness in the world," she added.

Her remarks came after Trump threatened on Thursday to allow the USMCA to expire and seek a new trade agreement with Mexico and Canada, even though the treaty is scheduled to be reviewed in 2026.

"There is enormous economic integration between the three countries, particularly between Mexico and the United States," Sheinbaum noted. "Separating that integration causes many problems for the United States and also for Mexico ... staying together is very important for the region, for our people and our nations."
