BEIRUT, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) on Friday said Israeli airstrikes and an unidentified attack on peacekeepers in southern Lebanon constituted serious violations of a UN resolution.
Peacekeepers observed a series of Israeli airstrikes in their area of operations in the villages of Marounah, Majadel and Baraashit on Thursday afternoon, while the Lebanese Armed Forces carried out operations to control unauthorized weapons and infrastructure in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL said in a statement.
"These actions are clear violations of Resolution 1701," said UNIFIL, urging the Israel Defense Forces to use established liaison and coordination mechanisms, and cautioning the Lebanese side against any response that could further worsen the situation.
The statement also added that on Thursday night, six men on three mopeds approached peacekeepers on patrol near the town of Bint Jbeil, and one of them fired three shots at the back of the UN vehicle. No injuries were reported.
UNIFIL called on Lebanese authorities to safeguard peacekeepers and promptly investigate the incident. ■
