ALGIERS, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Algeria has officially entered the fifth-generation (5G) mobile era, with a launch ceremony Wednesday evening at the International Conference Center in western Algiers attended by government officials and telecom operators.

The government has granted 5G operating licenses to the country's three national mobile operators -- Mobilis, Djezzy, and Ooredoo -- following a regulatory process completed last month.

A documentary aired during the event cited officials as saying that the new technology will enhance digital services, provide faster speeds, reduce latency, and foster innovation across key sectors, including industry, healthcare, education, and smart services.

Deployment will begin in priority provinces and gradually expand nationwide over the next six years. Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerouki described the 5G rollout as a technological leap for Algeria, expected to strengthen digital infrastructure and drive economic growth.
