KABUL, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- Construction has begun on a vital 46.5-km road connecting multiple districts in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan, the official Bakhtar News Agency reported Sunday.

Fully funded by the national budget at a cost exceeding 1 billion afghanis (over 15 million U.S. dollars), the project is slated for completion within 24 months, according to the media outlet.

The new route will link Nawe Mish, Baghni, Baghran, Nawzad, Musa Qala, and Gereshk districts, streamlining the transport of local agricultural goods to regional markets and injecting new economic momentum into these remote rural communities, said the report.

The initiative underscores the Afghan government's ongoing drive to broaden infrastructure and development programs across the nation, with a focus on overcoming economic challenges, alleviating poverty, and generating employment opportunities in the war-scarred country.
