KABUL, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Afghan authorities launched construction of 28 water supply networks in the western Afghanistan Ghor province on Thursday, reported the state-run news agency Bakhtar on Friday.

To cover six districts, the facilities at a cost of 2.5 million U.S. dollars would also create job opportunities for hundreds of people, the official media outlet said, adding that the project would provide potable water to thousands of people in the area after completion.

Post-war Afghanistan has been facing a water shortage due to years of persistent drought. The problem is even tangible in big cities, including the capital Kabul, where long queues of people can be seen at water taps and wells to fetch water daily.

To overcome the problem, the Afghan government has announced plans to manage water resources and bring water to Kabul city from nearby rivers and streams in the near future.
