COLOMBO, Nov. 19 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lankan police receive around 125,000 complaints of domestic violence against women each year, a deputy minister told parliament on Wednesday.

Deputy Minister of Women and Child Affairs Namal Sudarshana told lawmakers that by the end of September 2025, police had already recorded about 113,000 such complaints.

He said the government has taken several measures to reduce domestic violence, with a key focus on shortening the time police take to respond to these complaints.

The deputy minister added that the government has also moved to establish the National Commission on Women under the Women's Empowerment Act, No. 37 of 2024. The act aims to safeguard women's rights and provide effective remedies for rights violations.
