NEW DELHI, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- A top Naxal commander was among the six Naxals killed in a fierce gunfight with police Tuesday in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, officials said.

The gunfight between Naxals and joint contingents of police broke out in the Maredumilli forest of Alluri Sitaramaraju district, about 250 km northeast of Amaravati, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh.

The gunfight, according to police, broke out after the various wings of police carried out a joint search operation based on specific intelligence information suggesting the presence of Naxals in the area.

Police said they suffered no damage during the stand-off.

Local media reports said a few Naxals managed to break the cordon and ran away, but the operation to track them was still underway.
